# Create, switch and manage organizations

> How organizations work in Vimonto Deploy: create a new organization, switch between them, rename one, understand its address, leave it or delete it for good.

An organization is a separate workspace in Vimonto Deploy with its own servers, sites, members, connections and billing. Everything you create belongs to an organization, and everyone in it can see it, unless you limit a member to the servers of their [teams](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/organization/teams). Agencies often use one organization per client; a company usually needs only one.

When you register, you get an organization of your own straight away, named after you (for example "Sam's organization"). You can rename it, create more, and be a member of organizations that others invite you to.

## Switch between organizations

The organization menu sits at the top left, next to the logo, and shows the name of the organization you are in. Click it to see every organization you belong to and click one to open it.

Next to each organization in that menu is a gear icon that opens its settings directly.

When you sign in, or open the start page, Vimonto Deploy opens the organization you worked in last.

## Create an organization

1. Open the organization menu at the top left.
2. Click **New organization**.
3. Enter a **Name**, for example the name of your company, client or team. You can change it later.
4. Click **Create organization**.

You become the **owner** of the new organization and it opens right away. It starts empty: connect a cloud provider and a Git host under [integrations](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/connections/integrations), then [create a server](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/servers/create-a-server).

> [!NOTE]
> Each organization has its own plan. The first one you create starts with a 7-day Premium trial; later ones start on Free. See [billing](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/organization/billing).

## Organization settings

Open **Settings** in the top navigation of the organization. The settings are split into pages in the left rail:

| Page | What you manage there |
| --- | --- |
| **General** | The name of the organization, its address and deleting it. |
| **Members** | Who belongs to the organization and their roles. See [members and roles](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/organization/members-and-roles). |
| **Teams** | Groups of members and servers, and which servers each member sees. See [teams](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/organization/teams). |
| **SSH keys** | Keys added to every new server. See [SSH keys](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/connections/ssh-keys). |
| **Integrations** | Cloud and DNS accounts to create servers in and point domains with, Git accounts that sites deploy from, and storage for backups. See [integrations](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/connections/integrations). |
| **Audit log** | Who changed what in the organization, and when. See [audit log](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/organization/audit-log). |
| **Billing** | The plan (Free or Premium), usage and the subscription. See [billing](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/organization/billing). |

Every member can open these pages. Changing them depends on the member's role.

## Rename an organization

1. Open **Settings** → **General**.
2. Change the **Name** (at most 100 characters).
3. Click **Save**.

Renaming needs the owner or administrator role.

## What is the organization address?

The **Address** field on the **General** page shows the URL of the organization, for example `https://…/acme`. The last part, the slug, is made from the name when the organization is created. If that name is already taken, a number is added (`acme-2`).

The address doesn't change when you rename the organization, so saved links and bookmarks keep working. It can't be edited.

## Leave an organization

1. Open **Settings** → **Members**.
2. Click **Leave** next to your own name and confirm with **Leave organization**.

You lose access to everything in the organization at once. The only owner can't leave: make someone else an owner first, or delete the organization.

When you [delete your account](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/more/account#delete-your-account), you leave every organization the same way. An organization you're the only member of is deleted with your account; if you're the only owner of an organization that still has other members, make someone else an owner first.

## Delete an organization

Only an owner can delete an organization.

1. Open **Settings** → **General**.
2. Under **Delete organization**, click **Delete organization**.
3. If the organization has servers at a cloud provider, choose whether to also delete them there (**Also delete its servers at their providers**). This is on by default.
4. Type the name of the organization to confirm and click **Delete organization**.

With the servers deleted at their providers, Vimonto Deploy first deletes each machine at Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Akamai, AWS or Google Cloud, so their billing stops, and only then deletes the organization. You can follow this as a task. If a provider refuses (for example because its API token no longer works), the organization stays, with the servers that are left: fix the cause and delete the organization again.

With the option off, only Vimonto Deploy stops managing the servers. The machines keep running, and your providers keep billing for them.

Custom servers are never shut down by Vimonto Deploy. Shut them down yourself if you no longer use them. The same goes for servers created at a cloud provider that is no longer connected to the organization (the connection was removed, or the server was transferred in): Vimonto Deploy can't reach that provider account, so the machines keep running and being billed there. The confirmation says how many there are; delete them in that provider account.

A Premium subscription of the organization ends right away; it is not renewed.

While a server is still being created, provisioned or deleted, the organization can't be deleted yet. Wait until that task has finished.

> [!WARNING]
> The organization, all its members and all its data in Vimonto Deploy are permanently deleted. This cannot be undone.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many organizations can I create?

There is no limit. Each organization has its own plan: Free, or Premium with its own subscription.

### Can I move a server to another organization?

Yes. Open the server's **Settings** and click **Transfer server**. The person you offer it to accepts it into one of their own organizations; until then nothing changes. See [transfer a server](https://ops.vimonto.com/docs/servers/transfer-a-server).

### Why does my organization's URL still show the old name?

The address is fixed when the organization is created, so links keep working after a rename. It does not follow later name changes.

### Who can delete an organization?

Only members with the owner role. Administrators can change everything else but can't delete the organization or manage owners.
